Chapter Ten

Juliet

My mom might never stop hugging me, and my cousins are starting to circle.

She keeps saying sorry, and it’s obvious she wants to hash out some real pain right now, but as much as I would have welcomed this conversation yesterday, right now, I really want to go dance with Nate.

She sobs another apology, but I stop her.

“We have time to talk about this another day, Mom. Let’s celebrate, okay?”

Mom pulls back, but she keeps her hands on my arms. “Okay, sweetie. I love you.”

“I love you, too. Now, can you excuse me while I keep Lori from jumping on my date?”

Mom laughs and I stop Lori just in time.

“My date, my dance.”

Lori rolls her eyes, but Nate wears a look of such intensity that it sends a flood of desire through me.

I sigh deeply when he pulls me close.

“Feeling territorial?” he asks.

“I’m not about to let you blow my cover with Lori. She’s as big a gossip hound as Gran.”

“Gossip hound? Are you Gran?”

“Do you ever think about anything other than age?”

“Stop trying to distract from the real point, old lady,” he says.

“I hate you.” I smile.

“You love me.”

“Baby, if I loved you, there’d be a lot less fighting and a lot more kissing.”

“False,” he says.

I groan. “Did you just Dwight Schrute me?”

“It’s the superior show.”

I laugh, and my pulse speeds up. I love that he makes me laugh. I always feel like I’m funnier than the guys I go out with, and it’s such a turnoff. But Nate is delightful. There’s no other word for it. I could get used to laughing with him.

I already am.

“So you think if we were dating for real,” I say, “it would be all banter and no kissing? You’re not making a very compelling case for yourself, pal.”

He leans in so close, his lips graze my ear, making me curve into him reflexively. “Believe me, if we were dating for real, I’d kiss you so well and so good, you’d forget which twin you are. But I’d remind you.”

“How would you do that?” I ask breathlessly.

“Banter.”

I lay my forehead on his shoulder and laugh against him. His fingers on the small of my back spread, and we sway together until I’m ready to admit that I’m not faking. He kisses my jaw, just below my earlobe, and my legs almost give out.

“Nate,” I whisper.

“Jules,” he says, kissing my cheek.

“What are you doing?”

“Keeping it real.”

I should snort, because that is the cheesiest thing I’ve ever heard, but the thinking part of my brain has very much checked out. “You’re not kidding?”

“I’m a grown man,” he says. “Why would I fake date a gorgeous, interesting, fascinating woman when I can actually date her?”

“Are you reading a script? How do you keep saying the sexiest things a human has ever said?”

He chuckles in my ear. I never realized how sensitive I am, but Nate’s lips have pulled all sensation from every other part of my body and focused it right here, where his breath stirs every tiny hair on my ear, cheek, and neck.
