Chapter Ten
Juliet
My mom might never stop hugging me, and my cousins are starting to circle.
She keeps saying sorry, and itâs obvious she wants to hash out some real pain right now, but as much as I would have welcomed this conversation yesterday, right now, I really want to go dance with Nate.
She sobs another apology, but I stop her.
âWe have time to talk about this another day, Mom. Letâs celebrate, okay?â
Mom pulls back, but she keeps her hands on my arms. âOkay, sweetie. I love you.â
âI love you, too. Now, can you excuse me while I keep Lori from jumping on my date?â
Mom laughs and I stop Lori just in time.
âMy date, my dance.â
Lori rolls her eyes, but Nate wears a look of such intensity that it sends a flood of desire through me.
I sigh deeply when he pulls me close.
âFeeling territorial?â he asks.
âIâm not about to let you blow my cover with Lori. Sheâs as big a gossip hound as Gran.â
âGossip hound? Are you Gran?â
âDo you ever think about anything other than age?â
âStop trying to distract from the real point, old lady,â he says.
âI hate you.â I smile.
âYou love me.â
âBaby, if I loved you, thereâd be a lot less fighting and a lot more kissing.â
âFalse,â he says.
I groan. âDid you just Dwight Schrute me?â
âItâs the superior show.â
I laugh, and my pulse speeds up. I love that he makes me laugh. I always feel like Iâm funnier than the guys I go out with, and itâs such a turnoff. But Nate is delightful. Thereâs no other word for it. I could get used to laughing with him.
I already am.
âSo you think if we were dating for real,â I say, âit would be all banter and no kissing? Youâre not making a very compelling case for yourself, pal.â
He leans in so close, his lips graze my ear, making me curve into him reflexively. âBelieve me, if we were dating for real, Iâd kiss you so well and so good, youâd forget which twin you are. But Iâd remind you.â
âHow would you do that?â I ask breathlessly.
âBanter.â
I lay my forehead on his shoulder and laugh against him. His fingers on the small of my back spread, and we sway together until Iâm ready to admit that Iâm not faking. He kisses my jaw, just below my earlobe, and my legs almost give out.
âNate,â I whisper.
âJules,â he says, kissing my cheek.
âWhat are you doing?â
âKeeping it real.â
I should snort, because that is the cheesiest thing Iâve ever heard, but the thinking part of my brain has very much checked out. âYouâre not kidding?â
âIâm a grown man,â he says. âWhy would I fake date a gorgeous, interesting, fascinating woman when I can actually date her?â
âAre you reading a script? How do you keep saying the sexiest things a human has ever said?â
He chuckles in my ear. I never realized how sensitive I am, but Nateâs lips have pulled all sensation from every other part of my body and focused it right here, where his breath stirs every tiny hair on my ear, cheek, and neck.
